The Greek Islands have been a destination of choice since I first started choosing my own holidays in my late teens. They have seen me through girls holidays, couples holidays, and most recently family holidays without ever letting me down.
So far I have visited Crete, Corfu, Kos, Santorini, Mykonos, Patmos and mainland Greece – however there are still so many Greek Islands on my list to visit. The beautiful island of Kefalonia is certainly high up on the list!

The Ionian Islands, of which Kefalonia is one, are famous for their mouth-watering cuisine. Kefalonia has two signature dishes;
Kefallonitiki Kreatopita, a traditional meat pie from Kefalonia is a all-round family favourite thanks to its rich, well-spiced flavours, using bay leaf, garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg and marjoram. Usually prepared using a combination of veal and lamb, the meat is are cooked in a tomato and wine sauce with vegetables such as carrots, potato, leeks, before all being baked into a pie.
Chicken tserepa is age-old technique found in Kefalonia using a traditional clay cooking vessel, called a tserepa, over the heat of charcoal. The chicken used in this dish is marinated overnight in a concoction of oregano, smashed garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil, before being baked in the tserepa with tomato sauce, wine, lemon juice and potatoes, and comes out tender and delicious.
In the picturesque town of Skala, you will find some of the best beaches on Kefalonia – a real hit of Kefalonia holiday inspiration! Think golden sand stretching along the coast, backed by lush pine trees and, If you’re prepared to walk a little further, it’s normally possible to find a spot almost to yourself.
You’ll need a car, but a visit to Petani Beach, reached down a steep road that zig-zags from the cliff top, is a must when visiting Kefalonia. Set in a horseshoe-shaped bay, edged by a curve of sand and white shingle, you’ll find a couple of beachside tavernas perfect for a great sunset viewpoint.

Kefalonia is the perfect base for exploring the islands. With so many great destinations nearby, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to days out. You could choose to go looking for loggerhead turtles in Zante, set sail for a romantic visit to Ithaca, the ancient kingdom of Odysseus, or maybe you are feeling energetic enough to scale the heights of mountainous Lefkas.
